The race for Denton County sheriff has officially started with the filing of Republican incumbent Will Travis and his Republican challenger Tracy Murphree, a former Texas Ranger, on Friday afternoon. The two will battle it out in early March, with only one facing newcomer Randy Butler, the Libertarian candidate for sheriff, in November 2016. No one has stepped forward to run as a Democrat for the Denton County sheriff’s office, but the filing period doesn’t end until Dec. 14.
